ABOUT NORDIC BALLADS
Ancient Nordic melodies, the freedom of jazz improvisation and a contemporary musical language come together in Nordic Ballads, bringing old stories and traditions to life in a new form.
Nordic Ballads combines the ballad traditions of the Faroe Islands and other Nordic countries with contemporary jazz, improvisation and atmospheric soundscapes. Katrina Petersen’s Faroese roots and distinctive vocal expression, Villu Veski’s saxophones, Andreas Ugorskij’s guitar and Raun Juurikas’s keyboards and electronics create a musical space where tradition and the present meet.
In the expanded concert version, the ensemble is joined by Šatro Shaman Drum Orchestra, whose powerful drums and ritual energy bring an entirely new dimension to the music.

PRESS & REVIEWS
ALL ABOUT JAZZ
“Nordic Ballads was, in the end, more than a concert program—it was a deliberate act of cultural retrieval, Veski and his collaborators returning old stories to life with a modern sensibility that felt both timeless in origin and fresh in execution.”
Nenad Georgievski · All About Jazz · 9 June 2026
COULEURS JAZZ
“Villu Veski was reunited with Danish singer Katrina Petersen. Thanks to her Faroese family roots, she naturally interprets the archipelago’s ancient ballads, as well as songs in Icelandic and other Nordic languages. Alongside them, guitarist Andreas Ugorskij and keyboard player Raun Juurikas create an atmosphere of great delicacy, before the arrival of the Satro Shaman Drum Orchestra takes the performance into an entirely different dimension.”

UK JAZZ NEWS
“…they lifted the music into another dimension. By the end they had us all on their higher spiritual level.”
